8 Creative Ways to Add Writing to Your Art Journal

Today, I’ll be sharing 8 easy ways to add writing to your art journal. This is a great way to combine your creative and written processes, and it can help you develop your skills as an artist.

Adding writing to your art journal not only adds depth and meaning to your artwork but also allows you to express your thoughts, feelings, and ideas in a personal way.

Consider adding poetry, song lyrics, a good memory, or stream-of-consciousness writing.

Writing can help you understand your art better and make it more powerful. It also helps you become better at telling stories and showing emotions through your art.

Now, let’s explore 8 ways you can incorporate writing in your art journal pages…

The Side Note

When you need a quick note, write your thoughts off to the side to express how you’re feeling.

Diary

Add the date, time, place, mood, supplies, process, paint swatches, or preliminary sketches. This entry can be deep, detailed, and personal. I typically take up a whole 2nd page for this style.

The Footnote

If you have a top-heavy page, placing your writing at the bottom will help balance it out.

Big & Bold

Make it big and bold. Organized or chaotic. Print or cursive. Play with the shapes of your letters and the placement on the page.

Hidden

This is probably one of my fav ways to add writing. Use flaps of paper, post-it notes, tags, images, or fabric, to hide your secret thoughts.

Wrapped

Use the curves/corners of your subject to let your words flow around the page. Encase your elements with writing to help them stand out.

The One Liner

Keep your words short and sweet. Use a sentence or word.

The Silhouette

Fill in a solid shape with your journaling. Think about how you can make the image stand out by using a contrasting color.
